5-Year Mechanical Integrity Audit

Ensure Safety and Compliance with Our Comprehensive 5-Year Mechanical Integrity Audit

At Macha PSM, we understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of your ammonia refrigeration systems. Our 5-year Mechanical Integrity Audit (MIA) service is specifically designed to make sure your facility meets  mechanical integrity regulations.

Why Perform a 5-Year Mechanical Integrity Audit?

Facilities with an ammonia inventory exceeding 10,000 lbs are required to comply with several key regulations:

  • Federal Process Safety Management: Title 29 CFR §1910.119(j)

  • Federal Risk Management Plan: Title 40 CFR §68.73

Our audit services ensure that your facility adheres to these regulations by implementing inspection procedures aligned with recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP). The International Institute of All-Natural Refrigeration (IIAR) sets the primary RAGAGEP for the ammonia refrigeration industry, with the ANSI/IIAR 6-2019 standard being our guide for inspection, testing, and maintenance. In particular, ANSI/IIAR 6-2019 §5.4.2 requires:

Equipment inspections shall be performed by a qualified inspector(s). Every fifth (5th) year, at a minimum,

the annual inspections shall be conducted by a qualified inspector who shall not be influenced by the

facility’s record keeping, operations, maintenance, or management. This person shall not present a conflict

of interest and shall report instances of deficiencies.

Our 5-Year Mechanical Integrity Audit satisfies this exact requirement.

Our Service Offerings

1. Comprehensive Visual Inspections: Our qualified inspectors conduct thorough visual inspections of your ammonia refrigeration systems. We provide detailed checklists such as:

  • General System

  • Piping

  • Pressure Relief System

  • Safety Systems

  • Air-Cooling Evaporators

  • Compressors

  • Evaporative Condensers

  • Heat Exchangers

  • Pressure Vessels

  • Purgers

  • Refrigerant Pumps

Each checklist aligns with ANSI/IIAR 6-2019 Appendix B, ensuring that all critical aspects of your systems are inspected.

2. Detailed Summary and Recommendations: Following the inspections, we deliver a comprehensive report that includes:

  • Narrative description of each portion of the system(s)

  • Clear instructions for corrective actions

  • Proposed due dates

  • Priority levels

  • Relevant regulation and code references

  • Visual aids such as pictures or videos

This report empowers you to address any deficiencies promptly and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

3. Optional Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): For a more in-depth analysis, we offer an NDT package. Our ASNT-NDT-certified inspectors use ultrasonic testing methods to examine strategic locations within your systems. This testing helps identify potential corrosion issues and assesses the remaining life of critical components based on manufacturer data and industry standards.

Mechanical Integrity Inspector Qualifications

Our mechanical integrity inspectors have completed the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Mechanical Integrity – Ammonia Refrigeration course. The training focuses on recognizing key factors that degrade the mechanical integrity of ammonia refrigeration systems, conducting effective visual inspections of piping and vessels, classifying external corrosion when found on piping and pressure vessels, and managing mechanical integrity deficiencies when found on ammonia refrigeration systems. MI inspectors are also certified by the Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA).
